1:1 training blocks

Strength built in 12-week threads, not single sessions.

Plum Thread is a one-coach studio. You train twice a week with me, follow a written plan between sessions, and we review the thread every three weeks so the load keeps moving in the right direction.

Format
1:1 or paired sessions, 55 minutes, capped at eight clients per block.
Where
Private studio space, plus one optional outdoor conditioning slot each week.
Starting out
Beginners welcome — the first week is assessment and technique only.

How it runs

Four stages, one continuous thread.

Nothing here is a mystery before you commit. This is the same sequence every client goes through, whether you are returning to the gym after years away or chasing a specific lift.

Stage 01

Movement screen

A 45-minute session with no training load. We look at how you squat, hinge, press and carry, talk through past injuries, and agree what the block should actually achieve.

Stage 02

Written plan

You get the full 12 weeks in writing: session structure, the lifts we will build, the between-session work, and the weeks where load intentionally drops.

Stage 03

Coached weeks

Two coached sessions a week. I log every working set, so progression is decided from what you actually lifted rather than how the day felt.

Stage 04

Three-week review

Every third week we sit down for fifteen minutes, read the log together, and adjust the next block of three weeks before it starts.

If the screen suggests training is not the right first step, I will say so and tell you what to sort out first. There is no charge for a screen that ends there.

Programmes

Three threads to choose between.

Pick the one closest to your goal — we confirm it properly after the movement screen, and switching thread mid-block is normal if your priorities change.

Thread 01

Base Strength

For adults who want to get genuinely stronger in a handful of movements and keep that strength for good. Built around squat, hinge, press, row and carry, with accessory work chosen to protect whichever joint gives you trouble.

  • Two coached sessions plus one optional 30-minute home session
  • Loading written as ranges, so a poor night’s sleep does not derail the week
  • Technique video review for the main lift every third week

Thread 02

Work Capacity

For people who are already lifting but run out of breath long before they run out of strength. Half the session stays on the barbell; the rest is structured conditioning with a heart-rate target instead of a finisher picked at random.

  • One studio session and one outdoor conditioning session each week
  • Intervals progressed by work-to-rest ratio, written out in advance
  • Deliberate easy weeks after weeks three, six and nine

Thread 03

Back To It

For training after a long gap, a cautious shoulder or knee, or a stretch of life that pushed exercise out entirely. Lighter loads, longer warm-ups, and a plan you can hold to in a busy week rather than a perfect one.

  • Starts at one coached session a week and builds to two by week five
  • Every exercise has a written easier option for low-energy days
  • Notes shared with your physiotherapist on request

Schedule

Weekly session windows.

Check a window fits your week before you enquire. You keep the same two slots for the whole block, which is what makes a twelve-week plan work.

Current block. Windows are confirmed in writing when your place is booked.

The coach

I coach eight people at a time, on purpose.

I spent years in a busy commercial gym writing plans for people I saw for forty minutes and then never again. Plum Thread exists because the useful part of coaching is the bit that happens in week seven — when the plan needs changing and someone has actually been watching.

So the roster is capped. I write every plan myself, I am the person in front of you at every session, and I keep your training log rather than asking you to remember what you lifted. If you want a coach who will push a heavier bar, I will. If you want one who will tell you to go home and sleep, I will do that too.

Sessions are quiet. No music you did not choose, no filming, no leaderboard.

The 12-week thread

What the twelve weeks actually look like.

Every block follows the same four phases. Lit weeks below show where each phase sits, so you can see when the hard weeks and the easy weeks land before you start.

Weeks 1–3

Foundation

Technique, tempo and honest starting loads. Sessions finish with something left in the tank.

Weeks 4–6

Build

Load climbs week on week on two main lifts while everything else holds steady.

Weeks 7–9

Press on

The heaviest stretch of the block, with week nine deliberately lighter to let it land.

Weeks 10–12

Test and plan

Re-test the lifts we started with, then write the next thread from what the log says.

Blocks start fortnightly. If you join between start dates, your first weeks run as a short on-ramp so you begin the next full thread properly.

Questions

Asked before most people enquire.

I have never used a barbell. Is this the wrong place to start?

No — it is the usual place to start. Week one has no working loads at all: we spend it learning the five movements with an empty bar or a broomstick, and the first time you load anything is week two. Roughly half of each new block is people who have never trained with weights before.

What happens if I miss a session?

Tell me as early as you can and we move it to another window that week where one exists. Because you hold fixed slots, same-week moves depend on what is free, so the plan is written to survive a missed session: the following week picks up where you left off rather than skipping a stage.

I have a shoulder problem and a physiotherapist. Can those work together?

Yes, and it works far better when they do. Bring whatever your physiotherapist has given you to the movement screen. I will keep the rehabilitation work in the session, write around the movements you have been asked to avoid, and share my session notes with them whenever you ask me to.

Can I train with my partner or a friend?

Paired sessions are available in the Tuesday and Saturday windows. It works best when both of you are on the same thread and roughly the same experience level, because the session runs as one plan with two sets of loads. If your goals are far apart, two separate 1:1 slots serve you better.

Do I need to do anything between coached sessions?

Base Strength and Work Capacity include one optional 30-minute session you can do at home with no equipment beyond a chair and a doorway. It is written out in your plan. Skipping it slows progress a little; skipping the coached sessions slows it a lot, so that is where I ask you to be stubborn.

What if I want to stop part-way through a block?

You can stop at the end of any three-week stage — the review week is the natural place to decide. You keep the written plan for the weeks you paid for, and I will tell you honestly whether finishing the block or taking a break would serve you better.

Enquire

Ask about the next block.

Send a few details and I will reply with the windows still free, the thread I think fits, and the cost for the full twelve weeks. No session is booked and nothing is charged at this stage.

If a movement screen looks like the right next step, we will put one in the diary before you decide on a block.

I answer enquiries myself, usually within two working days.
